      Max Horkheimer, (born Febru , Stuttgart, Germany—died July 7, , Nürnberg), German philosopher who, as director of the Institute for Social Research (–41; –58), developed an original interdisciplinary movement, known as critical theory, that combined Marxist-oriented political philosophy with social and cultural analysis informed by empirical research. Eclipse of Reason is a book by Max Horkheimer, in which the author discusses how the Nazis were able to project their agenda as "reasonable", but also identifies the pragmatism of John Dewey as problematic, due to his emphasis on the instrumental dimension of reasoning.
